We Collected a Mountain of Toys for Kids in Need – Thank You!

It’s official we have collected at least double the amount of toys collected in 2017. It’s a record. We are also hearing 32 units of blood were donated to LifeStream. There were other charities that benefited too. All of this along with a car, motorcycle and plane show. There were also many great exhibitors that took the time to share their aviation stories.  We all had a blast! Click on 11-17-18 Stuff a Plane with Toys for Tots under the photo’s tab of this website to see some picture of this event.

Saturday November 17th was a great day at Redlands Airport!

REI Perimeter Fence Repair Near Run -Up Area

Its no secret that the perimeter fence at the airport has numerous openings that let coyotes and transients access the airport. When it is open near the Jacinto avocado grove we get lots of coyote activity as the grove is a source of food and water. Fence repairs near the run up area were started on Friday September 14th. Thank you City of Redlands for the needed maintenance!

Active Firefighting Aircraft Operations At Redlands Airport

Redlands Municipal Airport is once again demonstrating it’s value as a community asset.  US Forest Service contract firefighting helicopters are now operating from the West Ramp at Redlands Municipal Airport to support efforts to fight the “Valley Fire” burning near Forest Falls CA. These crews began arriving at the airport on Friday, July 6th. All of the firefighting aircraft belong to contractors. Some are from as far away as Atlanta, GA.

If you are flying into Redlands Airport, please be aware there are Notices to Airman (NOTAM’s) filed for this activity. Please exercise caution if you are using the airport during their stay. These folks are flying heavy helicopters that create significant rotor wash. They are also flying irregular traffic patterns. Please give them the right of way as they are engaged in firefighting activities.

Information about the Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for the Valley fire can be found at this link: http://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_8_9184.html

Redlands Airport Finally Gets a New Sign

Do you remember the deteriorated sign welcoming visitors to the transient ramp at the REI Lobby?  Well there has been a spare one collecting dust for years in our airport supervisors office. We guess they made two signs years ago. After at least a year of multiple requests, the City of Redlands installed the new sign and painted the mounting posts.             Thank you to the City of Redlands for this much needed maintenance!

Bird Strike in Vicinity of REI

A Bell 206 had an encounter with a large bird Monday 4/2/18. No one was hurt, except the bird. The aircraft is based at the owners residence and the strike occurred a couple of miles from REI. We are in the migratory season and the new Citrus reservoir is a huge attraction for birds. We have seen geese over the airport very recently. Please be vigilant for bird activity when operating near REI. For more information about bird strikes, please read: AOPA’s Air Safety Instititute Safety Brief – Bird Strikes. Please report all wildlife strikes to the FAA online at: http://wildlife-mitigation.tc.faa.gov

RAA Members Tour the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Aviation Division

RAA members held there January meeting at the San Bernardino County Sheriffs Aviation Division Hangar facility at San Bernardino Airport (SBD) on January 24th.

The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Aviation Division has an Aero squadron consisting of many volunteer pilots and observers. These volunteers provide many hours of time supporting this aerial law enforcement division. Some volunteers even provide their own aircraft to support the “Aero Squadron”. The Aero Squadron provides aerial support within the County of San Bernardino and some of its municipalities including Redlands. We have some pilots at Redlands Airport that volunteer for this important role.

RAA member and Aero Squadron Reserve Deputy volunteer, Dave Guthmiller, gave a very informative a presentation on the unit and a tour of the facility. Click on “RAA SBD Tour” to see some photos of the presentation and tour.

The San Bernardino County Sheriffs Aviation Division received 13,000+ calls for service in 2017. They have a first class operation at SBD.  We can all rest well knowing that they know how to use aircraft to protect the public.

Redlands Pilots Celebrate KREI’s 70th Birthday at National Aviation Day

On Saturday, August 19th, members of the RAA grilled burgers, hot dogs while EAA Chapter 845 took some potential future aviators on free airplane rides to celebrate National Aviation Day. A total of 33 children and 5 adults experienced flight courtesy of some generous EAA 845 pilots.

This was second year the RAA celebrated National Aviation Day. The holiday was created by proclamation in 1939 by President Franklin Roosevelt. The holiday coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright, one of the designer and pilots of the first successful airplane, the Wright Flyer.

This year’s celebration also honored the 70th birthday of Redlands Municipal Airport. A special cake was made for the occasion and served to those in attendance.

Happy B’day KREI!

Redlands Fire Department Conducts Fire Extinguisher Training at REI

The Redlands Fire Department attended the RAA monthly meeting on August 24th, to give all in attendance a great fire safety demonstration.

Members learned the importance of proper communication when calling 911 operators to request emergency services at the airport. Communications should be detailed and include the location of the incident on the airport and the nature of the emergency to help them to determine who will respond (police or fire) and the level of response. They also stressed the importance of having someone meet them at the gate to guide them to the accident location.

Fire department personnel also instructed those in attendance on how and when to use the large dry fire extinguisher that Hangar 24 donated to the airport.

And finally we had some hands on fun understanding the forces involved with line pressures. Go Jim Hoyt!
