Redlands Airport Re-striping Project Video

It was finished ahead of schedule and with consideration of users. The contractor, PCI, did a short video of their crews in action during this three night project. The contractor did a great job. Thank you to the City of Redlands, the FAA and PCI for this maintenance project! Enjoy this video and music!

Caution! Birds in Planes

Its that time of the year. Happy birds are in the midst of their annual mating ritual. We see them all over REI as we are in a known avian flyway. All aircraft owners, especially those that tiedown outdoors, need to be vigilant for birds nesting in our engine compartments, air inlets, vent openings and any where in the aircraft where bird can gain access. Hangared aircraft are also subject to this activity too. Please see the photo below of the second bird nest found in two weeks among aircraft being serviced by Blue Raven Aviation.

The NTSB has a few reports of aircraft accidents from fires resulting from nests made on top of cylinders. Nests can clog engine inlets, interfere with control movement. Bird poop can cause corrosion and paint damage. Please be vigilant during your preflight for evidence of bird nests. Keep all openings in your aircraft covered or plugged while it is parked.

Get Out and Fly!

There is nothing in the CDC guidelines that prevents any pilot from climbing in their airplane and going for a ride to maintain currency. There are issues if you take a friend for a ride as you will probably have difficulty with maintaining 6′ separation. But, you certainly can take your spouse and family members for a ride.

There are some sights to see in the local area. There are hundreds of airliners parked at Victorville Logistics Airport (KVCV). There are over a hundred Delta ships at San Bernardino too. It’s quite a spectacle, as we all know it is costing billions to park these aircraft as a result of the pandemic. We hope people will be willing to get in airliners soon! Here’s a photo from KVCV this morning.

If you hurry, there is a spectacular poppy bloom in the Antelope Valley. This will certainly cheer you up after your flight to KVCV. Just look west of Fox field ( KWJF) and you will see the orange landscape with miles of poppy blooms. Here’s another shot from this morning.

Unfortunately, your favorite local airport restaurants are closed to diners. But, many have takeout. Consider supporting them with a take out order. You may want to call ahead for their hours.

We will get through this! Stay healthy and fly safe!

Hangar 24 AirFest Moves to San Bernardino Airport

Hangar 24 Craft Brewing and San Bernardino International Airport have entered into a partnership to present the Hangar 24 SBD AirFest on May 30-31, 2020, a combination of the best elements of the long-running Hangar 24 AirFest and SBD Fest, two of the region’s largest community events.

The Hangar 24 SBD AirFest will be headlined by the United States Air Force F-35 Lightning II Demonstration Team, and the skies above the San Bernardino International Airport will come alive with performances by a number of talented pilots and their aircraft. The event will also feature a car show, live music performances, and a large selection of local craft beer.

In 2020, Hangar 24 Craft Brewing celebrates the 12th anniversary of its founding and its 8th year of air show festivities. For Cook, the decision to move the air show from the City of Redlands, where the brewery was founded, was not made easily. “We hold our city dearly and it was an extremely difficult decision to move the location of the AirFest, but we faced multiple significant challenges keeping the show at its former location in Redlands, including the loss of our main 40-acre parking lot. We’re excited to partner with SBD Fest and the San Bernardino International Airport to present the amazing air show event our fans and sponsors have grown to love.”

Going into its 6th year, SBD Fest, traditionally held in the fall, is now scheduled for the last weekend in May. Mike Burrows, Executive Director of the San Bernardino International Airport, is optimistic that the community will support the new event date, “SBD Fest is typically held in November, but with the increased growth in activity at SBD International Airport, especially in the 4th Quarter which is peak holiday delivery season, the Airport simply cannot accommodate a two-day festival like it has in years past. We are excited for this opportunity to combine our efforts into a community festival like no other.”

Event organizers plan to maintain the festival style of SBD Fest, with the traditional high energy of Hangar 24 AirFest. Existing and former event sponsors, vendors and partners for both events will be welcomed into the expanded event footprint, and event details will be shared via social media as new aerial acts and concert performances are confirmed.  For details and ticket information go to the event website www.hangar24sbdairfest.com

FAA Responds to REI Paraglider Incursion Complaint

The paraglider flights through the REI traffic pattern to get to the Hangar 24 brewery stopped for 3 months, or so, after the City of Redlands announced on 5-1-19, the use of private property in the City of Redlands for paraglider landing sites is a zoning violation. In other words, it’s illegal for the paragliders to land on private property near the brewery. Some folks may not know about this, or they just do not care as we have gotten at least a half dozen reports of paragliders transitioning through the traffic pattern since August. These recent activities have resulted in a complaint to the FAA. As a result of the complaint, the FAA will be performing an outreach seminar to the paraglider community and other interested parties to discuss FAA regulations pertaining to these activities. The seminar will be held at the Redlands Airport Public Lobby on February 14th at 9:30 am.

Bad Weather Forces Cancellation of Toy Airlift

Overcast, rain and probable icing conditions have mandated the cancellation of our toy airlift to Twentynine Palms Airport. Its all about safety! But we have to get the toys to the USMC so they can distribute them to kids in need before Christmas. So, the USMC will pick up the huge haul of toys we have collected tomorrow, Saturday 12-7, on the west ramp of Redlands Airport at noon. We sure hope they bring a really big truck!

WOW!

Redlands Airport Public Lobby Wooden Propeller Display

An old wooden propeller donated by longtime Redlands pilot Lloyd Roberts was made into a very attractive wall display by Redlands Airport Advisory Board Member Michael Sullivan. It’s a great addition to the public lobby. Thank you to Lloyd and Michael for their efforts to make our airport lobby a more interesting and attractive public space!
