Air Power

We’ve seen the hang gliders and parachutes riding the currents around REI. Some occasionally drop in to the parking lot of H24.

So I decided to run off the edge of a mountain recently to see what it’s all about.

However, instead of the IE, I chose the beaches of Rio de Janeiro.

I was privileged to have an instructor, Marcio, with me who has over 30 years of hang gliding experience. He even holds a record for the farthest distance flown (130 km that took 5 hours).

After one flight, I’m convinced that hang gliding is the closest humans might ever come to experiencing flight as our feathered friends. The only instrument or engine you have to worry about failing is the grey matter in between your ears.

I strongly encourage everyone to try and experience aviation in a new way. My only regret is I didn’t have my log book with me for Marcio to sign.

Nothing against the IE, but I can’t imagine a more pristine location for gliding than Rio!
